We were driving down a country road last week when another storm was passing through. We could hear the loud thunder booming around us, and see flashes of lightning, but there was no rain. As we drove, I glanced at the open field to my right. Against the backdrop of a row of trees, I could see rain. It was a band of rain, about twenty feet wide. It was raining there in the middle of the field, but to the left and right of that single band of rain, there was no rain at all! We watched, amazed, as in just a few seconds, the rest of the storm caught up and it began to rain all through the field and moved toward us. The rain quickly moved in our direction and a downpour ensued.
And is there anything in the world like the smell of the air after it's been washed by the rain? The dust and haze are gone, and it's so clear you can make out the detail of all the leaves on a tree. It's an indescribable sweetness.
These are things that city people probably never see or experience, watching the rain "walk" or walking into the smell of clean.
